What reality television actually pays

Less than most viewers assume, and the real currency is not the fee. It is the audience, which converts into brand deals, appearance money and a business people have heard of. That is a genuine income and it has a particular shape: it is large while you are on air and it declines when you are not.

The trade being made. A cast member is paid in attention and spends privacy. The attention stops when the show does. Whatever was built with it is the only part that survives.

Why the move behind the camera is the sensible one

RoleWhat it earns after the season ends
Reality cast memberDeclining relevance
On-screen actorA fee, and usually no royalty in Nigeria
Producer with a stakeA share of whatever the work earns

Ownership is the only row that compounds.

Being watched is a job. Owning the thing people watch is a business.

The Nigerian specifics

Nollywood has a serious shortage of producers with both capital and creative judgement, and a surplus of people who want to be on screen. Somebody arriving with an existing audience, commercial relationships and a production background is unusually well placed, and is also taking a pay cut in the short term to do it.

What makes this work or not

Whether the first project is actually finished and released. Nigerian entertainment is full of announced production companies and slates that never reach an audience, because financing a film is harder than announcing one.

The measurable version of this story is a title, a date and a distributor, twelve months from now.
