Bamanga Tukur Died Three Days Before His Ninety-First Birthday

Geo-Political News

Bamanga Tukur died at his Abuja residence around noon on Saturday, at 90, three days short of his 91st birthday. The death was confirmed by his family in a statement signed by his son, Awwal D. Tukur. Funeral prayers were held at the Lamido's Palace in Yola this morning and he was buried afterwards.

A career across four versions of Nigeria

RoleEra
Governor of the old Gongola StateSecond Republic
Minister of IndustriesMilitary government
Business and ports administrationAcross decades
PDP national chairmanFrom March 2012, under Goodluck Jonathan

Gongola no longer exists. It became Adamawa and Taraba in 1991.

The chairmanship is the contested part. Tukur took the PDP chair in 2012, when the party was still describing itself as the largest in Africa and was two years from losing power for the first time. His tenure ran through the internal fight that produced the breakaway faction, and it ended before the 2015 defeat. How much of that belongs to him is an argument that will be relitigated all week.

Read the tributes as positioning

Vice President Kashim Shettima called him a global star. David Mark said Nigeria will miss the wisdom of its elders. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri declared three days of mourning in Adamawa. These are sincere and they are also a set of politicians from different camps establishing a relationship with a figure everyone can safely praise, four months before a campaign.

In Nigerian public life, a funeral is the one venue where politicians from every side can be photographed agreeing, and none of them will waste it.

What is actually worth marking

A man who held office under a civilian republic, a military government and a democratic party machine, and who died in his own house at 90. That is an unusual career to survive intact, and the durability is the story rather than any single post he held.
