Clerics Were Taken In Zamfara, And The Accounts Do Not Match

Reports circulating since Saturday say several Islamic scholars were abducted at the Zamfara residence of Senator Abdul'aziz Yari, in some accounts after attending a prayer session for President Tinubu's re-election. The Nigerian Army has issued a response to the viral claims.

Why official denials in banditry cases are hard to read. Security agencies have a genuine operational reason to withhold details during an active response, and a track record of minimising incidents that have already happened. Both are true at once, which is precisely why a specific, checkable statement from the Army is worth more than a general one, and why a general one invites the interpretation it is trying to avoid.

The detail that makes this political

If the scholars were taken after a prayer session for the president's re-election, at the home of a serving senator, the incident stops being a crime statistic and becomes a statement about who is safe in Zamfara and where. That is exactly why the claim needs verifying rather than repeating, and why the outlets that ran it should say who told them.

In the North West, the number of people taken is often the only fact anybody establishes, and it usually takes a week.

What would settle it

Names, a police case number and a statement from the families. Zamfara has had years of mass abductions in which none of those three ever appeared publicly, and the pattern is why each new incident is argued about rather than investigated. The measure of this one will be whether anybody is named, and whether anybody comes home.
