The National Assembly Lists Are Out, And They Are The Real Election

The National Assembly Lists Are Out, And They Are The Real Election

Geo-Political News

INEC has published confirmed National Assembly candidate lists alongside the presidential field. Ondo State has 122 candidates. Kwara's PDP senatorial line-up has Saliu Mustapha for Kwara Central, Saheed Popoola for Kwara South and Kolo Baba Jiya for Kwara North. The Kogi Central list confirms Yahaya Bello as the APC candidate.

Why these lists get a fraction of the attention

Because a presidential race has three recognisable names and a National Assembly cycle has several thousand. It is harder to follow, harder to headline, and it determines whether anything the winner promised in January can be passed in June.

The arithmetic nobody campaigns on. A president without a working majority in both chambers spends his term negotiating with committee chairs. Every Nigerian administration since 1999 has learned this, usually in its second year, and the electorate is never asked to think about it during the campaign that decides it.

What the lists are actually useful for

Check thisWhat it reveals
Incumbents missing from the listPrimaries that were lost quietly
Names moving between partiesWhere the real defections happened
Seats with a single serious candidateRaces already decided
Women on the lists, by stateWhether anything has changed at all

All four are answerable today, from a document already published.

The presidential ballot is the one people discuss. The legislative ballot is the one that decides what happens afterwards.

The practical point for readers

Your senator and your representative are on a published list right now, months before anybody knocks on a door. That is the window in which a candidate is most reachable and least protected by a campaign machine, and almost nobody uses it.
